Artist Statement | Ellen Bang
My paintings reflect my continued interest in visual rhythms. I have chosen to express myself in abstract language, both in painting and in sculpture.
I am fascinated by structures and systems as found in geological formations and in living material, as well as in architecture and engineering projects. I also perceive the sound of spoken language and music to be informing my visual expressions.
All of these phenomena seem interconnected and they all play into my visual language in different ways. My paintings are not about any of them as such, rather they can be understood as parallel to them.
I enjoy playing with perception, expectation and movement within the painting. I feel these latest paintings can also be understood to be reflections on the situation we seem to have been thrown into with the pandemic and recent natural disasters, and on the collective and individual desire and will to overcome hardship.
I grew up in Europe in the sixties and my earliest experiences with art were influenced by the concrete abstractionists carving their niche in several countries, including in my home-country of Denmark.
